The Marchfeld as a granary?
Opinions differed in the early 19th century: while writers transfigured the Marchfeld as an almost inexhaustible granary at the gates of Vienna, experts described it as a sandy, barren steppe.
Which was true? To find an answer, we need to dig deep. From the urge for optimisation in the late 19th century to new agricultural technologies after the Second World War, to the current specialisation and technologization of farming in times of climate change … The fertile soil of the Marchfeld has seen it all.
