Tamed Danube and precious crude oil
Steamship ahoy! The industrial revolution went hand in hand with the regulation and expansion of rivers into waterways for large steamships. But first, the Danube’s dense alluvial forests, winding river branches, and wandering gravel islands needed to be tamed. The consequences of this regulation can still be felt today.
When the Emperor Ferdinand North Railway began operation and was connected to the rail network in 1837 , factories mushroomed and brought an economic boom in the area. Power continued to be generated. In 1949, one of the largest oil fields in Central Europe was tapped near Matzen.
