A battlefield and royal playground

Battle cries were often to be heard on the Marchfeld. Some battles went down in history – like the one in which Archduke Charles inflicted the first defeat on Napoleon. The Marchfeld sealed the fate for the Habsburgs: this is where their monarchy was founded, and this is where it ended.

During their 640-year reign they built many magnificent hunting lodges and stately summer residences, some of which boasted fabulous gardens. Exotic animals and ornamental plants from expeditions gave those gardens an even more exclusive note.

Some of them are now endemic to the Marchfeld.
