The Marchfeld as a granary?

Opinions differed  in the early 19th century: while writers transfigured the Marchfeld as an almost inexhaustible granary at the gates of Vienna, experts described it as a sandy, barren steppe.

Which was true? To find an answer, we need to dig deep.
